Flood insurance goes beyond standard homeowners insurance to protect your property from hazards like heavy rainfall, severe storms and other mishaps that may cause flooding. Nobody ever expects to be in the middle of a catastrophe, but you don’t want to be caught without the right protection in place if it does happen to you.
Whether you’re required to purchase flood insurance or just want an added layer of protection for peace of mind, JMG Insurance Services can help.

What Is Considered a Flood?

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) defines a flood as:

A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or of two or more properties (at least one of which is your property) from:
Overflow of inland or tidal waters
Unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
Mudflow
Collapse or subsidence of land along the shore of a lake or similar body of water as a result of erosion or undermining caused by waves or currents of water exceeding anticipated cyclical levels that result in a flood as defined above

What Does Flood Insurance Protect?

When you have flood insurance, the structure of your home and personal property is covered in case of damage including:
Comprehensive
Collision
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist
Rental Reimbursement
Towing and Labor
Gap
Every policy has different limits and deductibles, so it’s important to make sure you understand your coverage front and back. An experienced agent at JMG Insurance Services can assist you in putting together coverage that makes sense for you.

What Does Flood Insurance Not Cover?

As with every policy, you’ll want to carefully understand expenses that aren’t covered in the case of a qualifying loss due to flooding.

Some of these expenses not covered include:
Temporary living expenses if your home can’t be occupied
Property outside of the insured structure (fences, hot tubs, swimming pools, etc.)
Basements or personal property kept in basements
Currency
Valuable papers/documents
Losses from business interruption
Some of these expenses may be able to be covered under a different policy, so always speak with a specialist about the coverage you need.
